How the Conduit Fill Calculator Works
This calculator implements NEC Article 314.16(B), using the conduit interior cross-sectional areas of Chapter 9, Table 4 and the conductor cross-sectional areas of Table 5 — the same two tables an inspector checks a raceway fill calculation against. It supports mixed conductor sizes and insulation types in the same conduit run, which matters because Table 4's usable area already has the appropriate NEC fill percentage baked in, so mixing conductor counts and types correctly requires summing individual conductor areas from Table 5 against that one usable-area figure — not just eyeballing percentages per conductor group.
The applicable fill limit itself depends on how many conductors are in the raceway: 53% for a single conductor, 31% for two conductors, and 40% for three or more — the standard NEC fill percentages this calculator applies automatically once you've added your conductor groups and picked a conduit type and trade size.
Why This Matters
Overfilled conduit makes conductors difficult or impossible to pull without insulation damage, and it affects the ampacity-derating assumptions the rest of the NEC's conductor sizing tables are built on. Getting the fill calculation right the first time — with the correct table values for the actual conduit type and conductor insulation in use — avoids a rework cycle after rough-in.
